From the photographer's web site: "The author pictures were taken in the back office of the bookstore in the interval between the public reading and the schmoozing at Chez Panisse which followed. This interval tended to be brief."

Sera was employed at Black Oak Books, located in the Gourmet Ghetto district of Berkeley, from 1984 to 1987. Other subjects of his photography include the 1970s punk scene in San Francisco and Bay Area street scenes.
